What Are Player Props?
A player prop is a market on one player’s statistical output — points, assists, rebounds — rather than the game’s result.
Most sports bets are about teams. A player prop is about one line on one stat sheet: Jalen Brunson points, Nikola Jokić assists, Jayson Tatum rebounds. The bookmaker sets a line — 28.5 — and prices the Over and the Under on either side.
Props are markets
Each side has a price, a break-even rate, and movement. Books set prices independently, so the same prop is often available at different prices at different books — which makes comparison the first skill.
Why props move
Minutes changes, lineup news, opponent style, rest, and the market’s own flow all move lines. A prop that opens at 27.5 and closes at 29.0 has told you something — the market repriced the player.
Why they reward research
Player statistics trace to measurable inputs: minutes, usage, pace, matchup. That makes props a natural home for probability modeling — as long as you remember that a past rate is not a forecast.
